The primary goals of interior designing and decorating are to be able to enhance the life style of the occupants of a home by making their surroundings much more attractive. This process should definitely be implemented in such a way that it is in complete accordance with the specific wishes of the people who will actually be living there. A lot of factors like architectural technique, environmental constraints etc must also considered. It is a profession of innovation and creativity through which a good environment can usually be obtained.

One should not confuse decoration with designing. Some people believe that because people have been decorating the inside of their homes for a very long time, they eventually began to design them also. Designing is all about space arrangements and organization, whereas decorating deals with painting, furnishing etc. A general theme or style is often picked out when planning a particular home in order to allow it to emerge as a whole unit; not just a mess that has been carelessly thrown together. Every room of the house is designed in such a way that it is complimentary to the rest of the house.

The things that we are surrounded by can create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility or one of irritability. Proper decorating should depict the kind of lifestyle that promotes a harmony within the residents who will live there. First of all, it must have a personal as well as a professional touch to it. When we rearrange our room, we in a way can be temporary interior designers of our own; having the liberty to mix and match colors and different materials in order to create something that is very personal.

Color and light play a vital role in creating beautiful environments. They affect our psychological and physiological well-being. It has been proven that they affect us both visually and non-visually. They are certainly not just a decorative and aesthetic element for creating an attractive surrounding.

Our eyes rely on color for stimulation. When we are walking around in a natural environment, we are confronted with thousands of hues, which are being continually interpreted by our eyes and brain. We can use color in our living areas to change spaces, just as we experience when in nature. When we are walking in woods, we experience a sensation of being connected. Walking along paths on open ground will give us the sensation of space and a feeling of expansion.

To create a sense of openness in a living area, lightness plays an important role. A room can be made to look larger by using pale and very light colors. Cooler hues, such as blue or blue-green in their lighter shades, are particularly suitable for giving a sense of spaciousness. In addition, a high illumination level will also add to a feeling of space. Walls that are opposite windows should be kept very light, otherwise they will absorb a great amount of the incoming light. To the same effect, placing dark furniture opposite windows should also be avoided, otherwise an uneven illumination will occur.

A room will appear smaller if dark, saturated colors are applied to the walls. Warm colors, such as red or orange, will also give the impression that a room is smaller. Generally, all strong primal and darker hues will decrease the apparent size of living spaces. When windows are surrounded by lots of dark color, the contrast between the wall and the natural light will be strong and can cause a disturbing glare. This should be taken into consideration when using darker colors. Otherwise, you can create a very restful atmosphere with darker hues which create a sensation of being connected to yourself and others.

It takes time to create an effective and beautiful living area with colors. It is certainly worth the time and effort. You will create a place that energizes you and makes you feel good. Eyes are not made to stare at white walls, they rely on color and light for stimulation. Colors in rooms, well chosen, lead to a state of well-being and harmony.
